Direct answer: Indoor winter practice should prioritize safe, measurable tasks: putting start line, pace, routine, and decision review. Full-speed swings or ball striking require enough space, protection, and equipment designed for the task.
- 10 minutes: putts through a gate or over a start line.
- 10 minutes: pace to marked finish zones.
- 5 minutes: complete pre-shot routine with one ball.
- 5 minutes: review recent rounds and choose the next outdoor priority.
The plan at a glance
| Task | Simple setup | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Start line | Tape line or safe gate | Starts on line out of 10 |
| Pace | Coins or tape as finish zones | Stops in zone out of 10 |
| Routine | One ball, new target each time | Completed routine |
| Decision review | Scorecards or notes | One next priority |
Start with safety
Check clearance in every direction, protect people and property, and follow manufacturer instructions for mats, nets, launch monitors, and balls. If the space is not designed for a full swing, do not take one.
Foam balls and nets reduce some risks but do not make every room safe. Putting and routine work require far less space.
Build a putting station
Use painter’s tape only on a surface it will not damage. Create a start line and several finish zones. Alternate distances and record results out of ten.
A purchased mat may be useful for convenience, but it cannot reproduce every outdoor speed or break.
Practice decisions without hitting
Use old scorecards or course maps. For each common trouble situation, name the safe target, club job, and worst likely miss. Rehearse the full pre-shot sequence without a ball.
This preserves a decision process without pretending visualization replaces contact practice.
Carry one priority into spring
At the end of each week, keep one measure and one adjustment. When outdoor access returns, retest before assuming the indoor result transferred.
